What is TPLO surgery, and how do our veterinarians use it to treat ACL tears in dogs?
TPLO stands for Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, a surgical procedure used to treat cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs. The CCL is analogous to the human anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and helps stabilize the knee joint. When torn or damaged, dogs can experience pain, lameness, and decreased joint function.
Atlas Pet Vets is a veterinary clinic that treats various pet health issues, including TPLO surgeries. In TPLO surgery, the veterinary surgeon alters the angle of the tibial plateau to remove the need for a functional CCL. This is achieved by making a cut in the top of the tibia (shin bone), rotating the plateau, and then stabilizing it with a specialized plate and screws. This procedure helps restore stability to the knee joint and allows the dog to regain mobility and reduce pain.
Atlas Pet Vets employs experienced veterinarians skilled in orthopedic surgery and utilizes advanced techniques, equipment, and facilities to perform TPLO surgeries effectively. The clinic typically begins the process with a thorough physical examination and diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, to assess the extent of the CCL injury and determine the best course of treatment. If TPLO is deemed necessary, the surgical procedure is performed with careful attention to the dog’s individual needs and considerations.
After the surgery, Atlas Pet Vets provides comprehensive post-operative care, including pain management, rehabilitation plans, and regular follow-up appointments to monitor the dog’s progress and ensure a successful recovery. The goal of the treatment is to help dogs regain their mobility, alleviate pain, and improve their overall quality of life.
